The self drive option is a packaged safari that excludes transfers by our company. This package is especially popular for travellers who want to travel to or from our camps and other parts of our beautiful country by road.

Our self drive packages are offered on a two night minimum stay at either Tydon Safari Camp (offering a combination of Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand game drives) or Tydon Bush Camp (inside the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and offering only Sabi Sand game drives).

Self drive guests staying at Tydon Bush Camp are however prohibited from game driving in Sabi Sand  Game Reserve in their own vehicles; they may only drive between the gate and the camp in their own vehicle on entry and on exit. All game viewing is only permitted on a safari vehicle from Tydon Bush Camp with our qualified guide. Gate fees are also excluded on self drive packages, and these are payable by guests at Shaws Gate on entry. Credit card facilities are available, and please enquire about the current gate fees applicable on your reservation enquiry as these fees are reviewed and changed annually by Sabi Sand Game Reserve. About The Safari Camp

Tydon Safari Camp

Nestling in the shade of indigenous trees, this visual oasis of inspirational elements combines to cumulate in this magnificent tented safari camp.

Intimate and comfortable, yet simplistic combined with excellent service, the camp creates a traditional African safari feel to your journey, and you can be forgiven for thinking you were transported back in time to an unspoilt and unexplored Africa.

Sharing its borders with the world renowned Sabi Sand Game Reserve which forms part of the Greater Kruger region due to having unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park, Tydon Safari Camp offers guests a unique opportunity of staying in permanent semi luxury tented rooms and experiencing wildlife game drives in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve as well as the Kruger National Park.

Accommodation

Chic African styled tented rooms perched on raised platforms create the perfect ambiance for your safari stay.

The seven tented rooms combine privacy and comfort complete with en suite bathrooms with a shower and air-conditioning, while upholding the traditions of an African safari camp.

The tented rooms feature three quarter size twin beds with linen and African design bedspreads, side table with lampshade, comfortable chairs, mosquito nets, a mirror stand with hairdryer, luggage stands, plug points as well as tea and coffee making facilities.

Children have a unique experience by staying in their own tented room on the same deck as their parents or we provide stretchers in the same tent as the parents.

Safari Activities

Each day will see you participate in exhilarating game viewing opportunities in the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Game Reserve on open safari vehicles, with a chance to relax and refresh the soul, while maybe being fortunate enough to see lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino in their natural habitat.

Each morning your guide will wake you before first light to embark on your safari drive. The bush is already alive, the air filled with birdsong as the rising sunlight dances off beads of dew on spiders’ webs.

As the intense heat of the day cools, your afternoon safari drive in Kruger National Park or Sabi Sand Game Reserve will see you witness the inhabitants of the bush as they become restless and move out from the shade of the trees in search of water. Watch in awe as the sky turns to the sensational vibrant reds, gold’s and oranges, typical of an African sunset which majestically reflects its rays over rivers, natural waterholes and trickling streams.

For the more adventurous at heart, the ultimate adventure awaits you. African wilderness on foot! An early morning bush walk in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve with an armed ranger will see you hopefully encounter wildlife animals and birds while exploring the African bush as we venture into the unknown with the opportunity to face some of the mysteries of nature and to follow animal tracks. Bush walks are only offered on stays of four night or more.

 Safari Meals

We consider homely South African cuisine to be an essential part of the Tydon African Safaris experience. The meals that we serve is a reflection of real South African food. We do cater for vegetarians.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served after the early morning game drive or before departure on your last day. There is a selection of fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals, freshly baked muffins and flapjacks/crumpets. A traditional cooked breakfast buffet is also on offer. Fresh fruit juice is supplied.

Lunch

Lunchtime is during the heat of the day therefore, we prepare refreshing, light meals that satisfy the taste buds. Alongside a freshly made meal, there will be a selection of fresh salads and fruits on offer.

Dinner

A crackling campfire and flickering lanterns set the mood for dinner under the African skies, while the sounds of nocturnal animals calling in the distance can often be heard. In true safari style we all eat together around the boma.

Traditional South African food is generally cooked over an open fire or in a three-legged pot (or potjie), so meat tends to be served in either stewed or grilled form. We have a selection of the traditional meals which include a starch along with plenty of vegetables and side salads. You can purchase ice-cold beverages or a bottle of fine South African wine to complement your evening meal.
